Conversational Email Conversational Email Conversational Email By Ali Hale One reader, Bruce, wrote in to ask: I find it curious that the written word now includes expressions clearly intended for verbal exchange. Im referring to many of the suggestions you provided for email. In an attempt to be accurate and possibly too literal, I have tended to opt out of those uses. Specifically, when using phrases or words such as: I said†, I use I stated, instead of looking forward to hearing back from you, I use looking forward to your response. What is your take on this? This is a fascinating question, and there is no easy answer. Ultimately, few people would be surprised or annoyed by the use of â€Å"said† and â€Å"heard† in emails, even business ones. Here’s a few points that Bruce, and anyone else who’s wondered about the same issue, might want to consider. How common are verbal expressions in emails? Searching Google for the phrase â€Å"I said in my email† gives 26,500 hits, suggesting that this expression is in fairly widespread usage. (And given that most instances will be in private emails, that are not indexed by Google, this is probably a fraction of the true number.) Are emails closer to a letter or a phone call? For those of us who use email daily (probably most Daily Writing Tips readers!), we often feel it fills a gap somewhere between letters and telephone calls. Of course, emails are written, like letters are, but they have the immediacy of a phone conversation, and often a similar degree of informality. This is one reason why many of us tend to drop into using verbal phrases in our emails. My company has recently switched to using Google Mail, and email threads there are called â€Å"Conversations† by Google – again, suggesting that the way we think of email is bound up with verbal ideas. Perhaps part of the influence comes from instant messaging applications. Just think of the word â€Å"chat†, which used to have a verbal meaning – for many people now, the primary association is with â€Å"chat room† and â€Å"chat client†. When messages are sent through these applications, the format is often â€Å"Johnny says†¦Ã¢â‚¬  How formal should you be in an email? As I mentioned in my article of email stock phrases, it’s often unnecessary to be as formal in an email as you would be in a letter. To many recipients, Bruce’s â€Å"I stated† would sound very formal – even a little standoffish. If you do need to use formal or official language, though, it is safest to write â€Å"As I wrote in my previous email†¦Ã¢â‚¬  rather than â€Å"As I said in my previous email†¦Ã¢â‚¬  However, phrases like â€Å"Hope to hear from you soon† are appropriate even in a formal email if there’s a chance that the response might come by phone. Were verbal expressions used in letters in the past? One of my favourite books is an 18th century epistolary novel (a novel written as a series of letters between the characters) called Clarissa Harlowe, or, The History of a Young Lady by Samuel Richardson. His character Clarissa is a model of perfect behaviour and excellent letter-writing abilities. Early in the first volume (Letter II), she writes to her friend Anna: My brother was then in Scotland, busying himself in viewing the condition of the considerable estate which was left him there by his generous godmother, together with one as considerable in Yorkshire. In her next letter, Clarissa writes to Anna: (my brother being then, as I have said, in Scotland) From this, I would argue that the use of â€Å"said† to refer to something stated in previous written correspondence is not a 21st century innovation. What’s your take on this? Since this is an area with no hard-and-fast rules, it would be great to have your opinions. Do you think phrases like â€Å"As I said in my previous email† are appropriate? Migrants vs. Refugees Migrants vs. Refugees Migrants vs. Refugees By Maeve Maddox A reader wonders about the use of these words in the media: Please explain the difference between migrants and refugees. The news has provided nonstop coverage of migrants flocking to Europe from the Middle East and northern Africa. It seems to me these people should be more accurately described as refugees. Why are they suddenly considered migrants? Applied to human beings, the word migrant has a basic meaning of â€Å"a person who moves temporarily or seasonally from place to place.† The noun is also used attributively, as in â€Å"migrant camps† and â€Å"migrant policies.† In the United States, the most common use of migrant is in the context of agricultural workers: Between one and three million migrant farm workers leave their homes every year to plant, cultivate, harvest, and pack fruits, vegetables and nuts in the U.S.    In Australia, the word migrant is commonly applied to immigrants who have come to make a permanent home in the country: Settlement services are intended to assist new migrants to participate as soon and as fully as possible in Australia s economy and society. A migrant chooses to leave home, but a refugee is forced to seek a place of safety elsewhere, often in a foreign country. People flee their homes for causes that include war, religious persecution, political troubles, and natural disaster. The earliest use of the word refugee in English was in reference to Protestants who fled France in the seventeenth century. In the media, the word migrant is sometimes used alone in reference to the hordes of people presently moving into Europe, but increasingly, the two words are used together: Tens of thousands of  migrants and refugees  have entered Germany in recent weeks after making arduous journeys through multiple countries. All of the people flooding into Europe from Syria and elsewhere are migrants, but not all are refugees according to the international legal definition. As defined by international law, a refugee is a person who has fled a country to escape war or persecution and can prove it. Refugees are entitled to basic protections as defined by a United Nations convention. Verified refugees cannot be sent back to countries where their lives would be in danger.   Migrants, on the other hand, move from one place to another for reasons that may be understandable, but are not sufficient to classify them as refugees. For example, some migrants are fleeing poverty. Others may have been living above poverty in their home countries, but decide to emigrate in search of better economic opportunities. Note: Although people fleeing the devastation of natural disasters are often referred to as refugees, they are not at present included in the international legal definition. Healthcare Consent legislation Essay Healthcare Consent legislation applies to everyone above the age of 18 (some places 16) and has the following rights (Ref 1) 1)The right to give or refuse consent 2)The right to choose a particular form of healthcare on any grounds including moral or religious grounds 3)The right to revoke consent 4)The right to expect that a decision to give, refuse or revoke consent will be respected 5) The right to be involved to the greatest degree possible in all case planning and decision making Mostly all nursing actions are an invasion of a person’s privacy and giving consent is carried out by going into the hospital or being treated at home. So one can say that consent is based on the principle of respect for a fellow human being. (Ref 1,2) This legislation tells me that all patients and clients have a right to receive information about their condition. As a nurse I should be sensitive to their needs and respect the wishes of those who refuse or are unable to receive such information. (Ref 1,2) For instance, there may be a language barrier and I should not just go about reading the consent form in English, rather I should arrange for a interpreter or find a nurse who speaks the clients language. I also respect their decision of autonomy-their decision to accept or decline any health intervention even if a refusal means loss of life, example Jehovah s witness refusing blood transfusion. The client will now have alternate options given by the Health Care Providers. Informed consent is obtained by a legally competent person, who voluntarily accepts or declines the consent after being informed of the treatment including side effects, adverse effects.(Ref 1,2) Many people are frightened by unfamiliar medical procedures and interventions and may thus want to back off from any treatment. This decision should be respected, and the client should not be forced into taking any of these medication or treatment. Rather the nurse can educate them to the best of her education and training if the client wants to know about it. Historically dating back to 1914, it was Justice Cardoza who changed the concept of research ethics involving human beings. The foundation of modern day informed consent is based on his statement â€Å"Every human being of adult years and sound mind has a right to determine what should be done with his (or her) own body.†(3) There were many historical events that lead to present day consent acts. Some of them were as follows (ref #3) 1) Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in Black  Men (1932-1973) 2) The Nuremberg Code as a result of the Nazi Medical Experiment during World War II (1947) 3) The Thalidomide experiment that resulted in birth defects (1950) 4) The declaration of Helsinki (1964) I feel these events all had a big role in shaping modern day HCCA and Consent legislature.Previously, a simple consent question would be â€Å"did the patient agree to surgery?† (Ref 2), which now has evolved into â€Å"Did the physician provide the patient with adequate amount of information for the patient to consent?† This newer version of the legislation allows the nurse to participate in proper advocacy so as to promote patient autonomy in self-determination. Initially informed consent meant saying â€Å"YES† to any treatment or intervention laid out by the physician and advocated by a nurse (Ref 1). Now informed consent means being able to say â€Å"NO† and this in itself is a part of exercising ones autonomy.(Ref2)Nurses should practice with the knowledge that clients must consent to be touched ,to have treatments administered , to undergo surgery, for bathing, positioning, taking vital signs, physical assessment ,changing dressings, venipuncture,wo und irrigation, catheter insertion just to name a few. If a patient or client is not capable of giving consent then besides the HCCA (1996) Ontario does have the Substitute Decision Act(1992) SDA . This act allows a substitute decision maker –a spouse, a relative, a parent and in the absence of these someone can be appointed by legal authority if the patient has not indicated otherwise. In emergencies where the priority is preservation of life, a nurse or HCP can provide care to the patient or client without their consent if they are incapacitated, provided it is demonstrated that this action was carried out in the best interest of the patient or client.(Ref 1) In conclusion, I can say that nurses are patient advocates and an essential member of the healthcare team contributing meaningfully to the informed consent process. There are many barriers to the HCCA especially in terms of informed consent, but the well informed and knowledgeable nurse is competent enough to have a thorough understanding of her clients’ needs. She being the clients best advocate will implement the informed consent procedure so as to maintain the clients’ autonomousity so that he or she can maintain their self-determination. This legislation has allowed nurses to be accountable for the best interest of the client and  carry out their role as a client advocate.

Dehumanization of the Slave Trade Bare feet walked across the rocky dirt road. Hands, feet, and wrists chained together. A long line of black people, men and women and even young maturing children. Beaded up hair from the water and sweat dripping from their filthy bodies from the hot desert-like sun beaming upon them. Dusty looking skin from the times they fell and tried so hard to get up. Empty stomachs; starving people; black people. Some naked and some clothed. They have been walking for some miles, being pulled along, whipped continuously, and told what to do; by the white man. Flies buzzing around them. Rotten smells of all sorts. Swollen feet and hands from the treacherous journeys and over-bearing labor that they had to endure. They were slaves. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the labor of African Americans was in higher demand. This was due to the insufficient amounts of white and Indian indentured servants, for the use of agricultural labor. During the 16th and 17th century time periods, Brazilian and Caribbean sugar plantations were very profitable and the use of African Americans as the laborers/workers provided a model for the European colonists in North America. (historychannel.com) Africans served as guides and soldiers in the journey of Mexico, however when they were brought to North America they were instead used to produce export crops, such as tobacco, rice, indigo, and cotton, which was a major source of wealth. Once this had begun the English settlers gradually begin to turn to black slavery to solve the labor shortage (history channel.com). Spain and England engaged in the housing of slaves. In the 16th century Spain brought in 100,000 Africans. Baderman Island Resort The Baderman Island Resort is a luxury style resort whom depends on its elite location, all-inclusive accommodations, and cultural attractions to catch the attention of its guests. Boardman Management Group is responsible for the operations of three hotels, several restaurants, two gift shops, a golf pro shop, and a spa. Baderman Island Resort attracts events such as company retreats, conventions, expositions, and family or couple vacations; which happen to be the key of growth for the resort.To assure the attraction and maintain revenue, the resort in combination with its staff must be able to provide a luxurious environment for its recreational guests and a world-class environment for its business clientele. This paper will present recommendations to improve the environment at Baderman Island Resort. Creating Alliance Baderman Island knows that their internal and external stakeholders; their employees and their guests, are the most valuable people for keeping their business a success.There are always ways to improve a business and they understand that. So the first strategy recommended for Baderman Island would be to reduce workplace stressors. Role stressors, workload, work-family conflict, job insecurity, and organizational constraints are a few workplace stressors. Some specific stressors for Baderman Island employees could be that they feel overwhelmed since there is so much future development being planned, as well as never having a quiet calm workplace since tourists are always visiting.There are ways to reduce stressors though. â€Å"Organizational efforts to reduce the impact of job-related stressors generally take one of five forms: (1) stress management training, (2) reduction of stressors, (3) alternative work schedules and telecommuting, (4) family-friendly benefits, and (5) health and fitness programs† (Jex, 2008, p. x). Having a stress management program would be very helpful for Baderman Island employees, so they c an be educated in the nature of stress and its effects.Since this is a resort destination, the company could offer family-friendly benefits by offering a weekend where employees and their families are invited to enjoy the island and its amenities together at no cost. Health and fitness programs are another reducer of stressors, so Baderman Island could offer the golf course and spa at discounted rates to their employees. Offering the Hot Stone Massage for $50 rather than $115 could definitely benefit the employees.A second strategy recommended to Baderman Island to create alliances between the company and their employees and customers would be to motivate employees with different types of goals. The goals would have to do with the customers. For example, Baderman Island could start sending out surveys when people depart from the island asking for feedback and the goal would be to receive a certain amount of high customer satisfaction. This would not only assure that the customers ar e enjoying their time on the island, but also motivating the employees to be hard and helpful workers.Jex (2008) explains the three main reasons that goals have motivational value: Directs employee’s attention and effort in a particular direction, avoid being sidetracked by maintaining task persistence, and facilitate the development of task strategies, which could mean employees coming up with innovative ideas to reach the goals (p. x). Meaning this is a win-win situation for Baderman Island, its employees, and the guests. Leadership versus management differences A leader is a person who leads whereas a manager is on who manages. A leader is to motivate people.Manager is given powers by the company and the subordinates and they have to do as they are told. There is a difference within them both. Managers think incrementally, leaders think radically. Managers tend to do everything by the book and with leaders the just go with the flow. BMG hire managers that are experienced i n their field. They also look and hire people that have new ideas and the visions for the island, that way they don’t have the necessary experience. The resort is managed by the Boardman Management Group (BMG) who is responsible for various strategic functions.The CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board of Resort Management, and works closely with the Resort Board of Directors and supervises the relationship between Baderman Island Resort and the Boardman Resort Management Boardman Management Group (BMG) is responsible for handling the following departments resort-wide: †¢ Regulatory †¢ Finance/Accounting (Consolidated Statements) †¢ Legal †¢ Marketing †¢ IT Services Each unit is headed by a General Manager that reports to the Vice President, that handles all locations within their specified areas. Lodging: Main Hotel, The Tenney, Melancon Convention Hotel †¢ Convention: Convention center building and meeting rooms. †¢ Food Services: All re staurants and kiosks †¢ Merchandising: All hotel shops and visitor center shops †¢ Recreation and Activities: Visitor center, golf, pro shop, beach activities, botanical garden. †¢ Engineering/Transportation: Maintenance and repair, housekeeping, transportation, building upkeep, ferry, train Each unit is considered a profit center, except for Engineering and Transportation, and is responsible for their own budget and overall profitability and growth.Each SBU is charged back for the service utilized from Engineering/Transportation. With in the Baderman Island Resorts the managers of each area can also be good leaders to lead their employees to perform the highest customer service. They would also have to appoint some one as a crew leader. A manager needs to be formal authority or management to be really effective. Having a set crew leader for each area of the resort that way the employees have someone to come to with issues instead of going directly to the manager.If t he leader isn’t able to help or answer their questions or problems then the leader would have to go to the manager for management response. Environmental Proposal Baderman Island resort and spa has created a destination desired by worldwide travelers. The vacation atmosphere is visually created by the brick and mortar presence of the lighthouse, hotel, botanical gardens, and island. The vacation experience is created by Baderman Island employees.Baderman Island management wants to create a corporate environment that acculturates supportive team function and learning while empowering sustainable innovation and creativity. To promote team-oriented behavior throughout the Baderman Island corporate culture several recommendations are presented. Each department within the organization will be considered a team. To begin, create recognition and reward systems highlighting and promoting the team. Suggestions and recommendations to innovate, develop, and improve services and systems throughout the organization will be recognized at the team evel. If a team’s suggestion results in an implemented policy or program, it will be named after the team that made the suggestion. The rationale for naming the policy or program after the proposing team is the elevated sense of contribution to the organization’s core function bestowed upon the team. Teams will enjoy worldwide recognition for suggestions implemented to improve organizational relations with the local community, organic farmers, or botanical organizations.To create an environment that encourages and rewards innovation and creativity, any team suggestion implemented that create corporate efficiencies that can be calculated as a savings will be remunerated as a spiff to the suggesting team members as long as they are with the organization. The spiff will be 2% of the corporate savings to the team up to $50,000 annually, and 1% of corporate saving to the team if the spiff exceeds $50,000 with no max imum. To encourage individuals’ participation within team structures each team will be able to put individual members on probation, with cause.Management will be required to review team members put on probation to make a move or remove determination. Teams will collectively have the discretion for individuals’ movement between teams to empower teams to elevate morale. The corporation’s international customers will be better serviced by employees who know French and Spanish. Employees will be encouraged to expand their individual repertoire and receive a $500 spiff for learning French or Spanish and pass a language test. Team participation will be encouraged with a $10,000 team spiff when all team members learn French and Spanish and pass a language test.To build corporate buy-in and develop employee knowledge a $500 spiff will be given to employees learning two sister teams’ role, function, and responsibilities and passing a test. To encourage intra-team collaboration a $10,000 team spiff will be awarded when all team members learn two sister teams’ role, function, and responsibilities. Conclusion The alliance created between Baderman Island Resort, the employee, and their clientele are the key to success for the all-inclusive, luxury resort.Baderman Island Resort will prosper in growth and revenues as a result of the satisfaction of all entities responsible. Throughout the recommendations, job satisfaction and customer satisfaction are the basis for success. When the entities believe they are a key to the success, they are more willing to participate in the recommendations. We have made several recommendations on how to improve the environment of Baderman Island Resort and these recommendations now lie within the decisions of the management team.

How Does Steinbeck Make Lennie’s Death Seem Inevitable in Of Mice and Men Essay

Of Mice and Men, published by John Steinbeck in 1937, is set in the Salinas Valley of California during the Great Depression. The novels two main characters, George and Lennie, embody the American struggle to survive the Depression, but the novel is timeless because it captures the personal isolation and suffering present in the land of opportunity. During the last scene George tells Lennie to take off his hat and look across the river while he describes their farm. He tells Lennie about the rabbits, and promises that nobody will ever be mean to him again. Le’s do it now,† Lennie says. â€Å"Le’s get that place now. † George agrees. He raises Carlson’s gun, which he has removed from his jacket, and shoots Lennie in the back of the head. As Lennie falls to the ground and becomes still, George tosses the gun away and sits down on the riverbank, this is one of the times when it proves the main point Steinbeck is trying to percieve: loneliness and isolation. The Title ‘Of Mice and Men’ originated from the poem by the Scottish Robert Burns in 1765 , called ‘To a Mouse’. A major point to note is that Burns is saying that the mouse does not think and lives in the present rather than being able to look over life and its past, which is comparable to Lennie (in ways) because he has the mentality of a child he does not mull over past thoughts. However he is also saying that man’s dominion has broken Nature’s social union, because as mankind we do worse. The best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray- ‘The best laid schemes o’ mice and men Gang aft agley And leave us nought but grief and pain For promised joy! ‘ This ties in to the mice in the story, but more broadly refers to the tragedy of causing pain with good intentions. There are many ways to look at this verse and how it adds to the inevitability: the mice refer to weak people, such as Lennie, Crooks, and Candy, and men refer to strong people, like George and Slim, the book is a story of weak and strong people. Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men at a time when he was becoming involved in California’s social and economic problems. John Steinbeck lived during the Great Depression years, a time in which many people were at or below the poverty line. Many of those people became non-trustful of any individual new to town, or those that threaten their community social standards. People, in many cases, imagined threats that did not exist. Also, many people became extremely possessive of what little they had. During the late 1930s, California was struggling not only with the economic problems of the Great Depression, but also with severe labor strife. By the late 1930s there were an estimaled 200,000 to 350,000 migrants: underpaid, underfed, and underemployed. However, California’s agricultural system could not exist without the migrant workers. Quotes that reprsent the Great Depression: â€Å"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place. . . . With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We don’t have to sit in no bar room blowin’ in our jack jus’ because we got no place else to go. If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us. † Chapter 1. This signifies how they are migrant workers during the Great Depression, two guys continuously looking for work and trying to survive. â€Å"I seen hunderds of men come by on the road an’ on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an’ that same damn thing in their heads. Hunderds of them. They come, an’ they quit an’ go on; an’ every damn one of ’em’s got a little piece of land in his head. An’ never a God damn one of ’em ever gets it. Just like heaven. Everybody wants a little piece of lan’. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’s just in their head. They’re all the time talkin’ about it, but it’s jus’ in their head. † Chapter 4. Again it signifies the migrant workers of the time, searching for work and never losing hope and always having the american dream in mind. The thought that keeps them going is that one day they’ll make enough money and have land of their own, but the Great Depression was really tough and that just didn’t happen to everyone who wished for it. The American Dream is a dream of a land in which life should be better, richer, fuller and with opportunity for each. It is a dream of social order in which each man and woman should be able to achieve the fullest stature of which they are capable of, and be recognized for what they are, regardless of the circumstances of birth or position. George and Lennie’s main ambition is to â€Å"get the jack together† purchase a few acres of land they can call their own, â€Å"an’ live off the fatta the lan’. This is their dream and their dream, however, cannot exist without friendship. The constant repetition of the way things will be is what keeps the dream alive in Lennie. George needs Lennie just as much as Lennie needs him, which is apparent at the end of the novel. When George kills Lennie, he also kills the friendship, which results in the death of the dream within him. All the characters wish to change their lives in some fashion, but none are capable of doing so; they all have dreams, and it is only the dream that varies from person to person. The farm George and Lennie hope to own is a symbol of the American Dream. Steinbeck uses animal images in his story. Most often applied to Lennie, imagery is particularly apparent in his physical description. His hands are called â€Å"paws† and indicate trouble when he uses them. He lumbers along like a bear in Steinbeck’s earliest descriptions of him. Lennie is also associated with rabbits, which are part of his dream (he will get to tend them on the farm) and because they are soft things he likes to pet. Rabbits also symbolize his realization that he is in trouble; if Lennie does â€Å"a bad thing,† George will not let him tend the rabbits. In the last scene, when Lennie is at the pool, waiting for George, a rabbit appears to him, berating him and telling him that George will not let him care for the rabbits. In addition, Lennie’s loyalty to George is frequently described like that of a dog, especially a terrier. Steinbeck chose these images because they connote particular traits: unleashed power, conscience, and loyalty. In this way, it helps the reader understand Lennie and why he often acts instinctively. Lennie ‘snorted into the water like a horse†¦ ’animal imagery –implies carelessness –ominous – he is simple -it will be the reason they get into trouble later in novel â€Å"Lennie dabbled his big paw† – animal imagery – referred to as a bear, suggests his size, his movements, unrefined, simplicity of thoughts, clumsy, adorable yet aggressive, foreshadowing later danger – also like the bear hunting for fish. ’ Like a terrier who doesn’ t want to bring a ball to his master’ ’ simile to compare Lennie to a terrier and George to a master. At the end of the novel, George kills Lennie in much the same way as Carlson kills Candy’s dog. The dog is seen as useless and smelly, therefore it was see n as more of a nuisance to Carlson and the others in the bunk house. The men argue that the dog is miserable and in pain, which convinces Candy to let Carlson shoot the dog. After the dog is killed, however, Candy tells George of his regret for letting someone else shoot his dog. The dog was Candy’s responsibility, and Candy feels he let the dog down by not taking its life himself. â€Å"You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn’t no good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here I wisht somebody’d shoot me. But they won’t do nothing like that. I won’t have no place to go, an’ I can’t get no more jobs. † (Page 60) This is basically Candy realizing that he’s weak and not really important to anyone on the farm; he has no more power than his dog, who was shot, had. â€Å"I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog. (Page 61) This was one of the most important quotes that Candy made. It foreshadowed the end of the story, which was that George would shoot Lennie instead of letting a â€Å"stranger† (the other ranch hands, namely Curley) do it. This quote foreshadows this due to the parallelism that is drawn b etween the relationship of Candy with his dog and the relationship of George with Lennie. George is determined not to let this happen to him. George knows that Lennie will be killed by Curley and the other men if and when they find him, and George wants to protect Lennie from the others. George sees Lennie as his responsibility, and George feels that he must take action to look after Lennie, even if this action leads to Lennie’s death. Lennie’s death also reflects the killing of Candy’s dog in the actual manner of the shooting. George shoots Lennie in the back of the head, just where Carlson told Candy he would shoot the dog, promising that the dog would die instantly and would feel no pain. George wants this â€Å"pain-free† death for his friend. In conclusion, Steinbeck is able to highlight the loneliness of the unsettled migrant/workers, and the sharing of their dream. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck has made the ending of the novel (in which Lennie’s death occurs) inevitable by emphasising the loneliness of most of the characters such as- Curley’s wife, Curley, Candy (after his Dog’s Death, Crooks and George (after Lennies Death) at one point they all make a speech about their dreams and loneliness. Steinbeck also manages to emphasize Lennie’s stength and that because he has the mentality of a child, this is not the best combination as he most always ends up doing wrong. The Southern Ocean Is the Fifth and Newest World Ocean In 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization created the fifth and newest world ocean - the Southern Ocean - from the southern portions of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. The new Southern Ocean completely surrounds Antarctica.​ The Southern Ocean extends from the coast of Antarctica north to 60 degrees south latitude. The Southern Ocean is now the fourth largest of the worlds five oceans (after the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean, but larger than the Arctic Ocean). Are There Really Five Oceans? For some time, those in geographic circles have debated whether there are four or five oceans on Earth. Some consider the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific to be the worlds four oceans. Now, those that side with the number five can add the fifth new ocean and call it the Southern Ocean or the Antarctic Ocean, thanks to the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). The IHO Makes a Decision The IHO, the  International Hydrographic Organization, has attempted to settle that debate through a 2000 publication that declared, named, and demarcated the Southern Ocean. The IHO published the third edition of Limits of Oceans and Seas (S-23), the global authority on the names and locations of seas and oceans, in 2000. The third edition in 2000 established the existence of the Southern Ocean as the fifth world ocean. There are 68 member countries of the IHO and membership is limited to non-landlocked countries. Twenty-eight countries responded to the IHOs request for recommendations on what to do about the Southern Ocean. All responding members except Argentina agreed that the ocean surrounding Antarctica should be created and given a single name. Eighteen of the 28 responding countries preferred calling the ocean the Southern Ocean over the alternative name Antarctic Ocean, so the former is the one that was selected. Where Is the Fifth Ocean? The Southern Ocean consists of the ocean surrounding Antarctica across all degrees of longitude and up to a northern boundary at 60 ° South latitude (which is also the limit of the United Nations Antarctic Treaty). Half of the responding countries supported 60 ° South while only seven preferred 50 ° South as the oceans northern limit. The IHO decided that, even with a mere 50% support for 60 °, since 60 °S does not run through land (50 °S does pass through South America) that 60 °S should be the northern limit of the newly demarcated ocean. Why the Need for a New Southern Ocean? A great deal of oceanographic research in recent years has been concerned with ocean circulations, first because of How Big Is the Southern Ocean? At approximately 20.3 million square kilometers (7.8 million square miles) and about twice the size of the U.S.A., the new ocean is the worlds fourth largest (following the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian, but larger than the Arctic Ocean). The Southern Oceans lowest point is 7,235 meters (23,737 feet) below sea level in the South Sandwich Trench. The sea temperature of the Southern Ocean varies from -2 °C to 10 °C (28 °F to 50 °F). Its home to the worlds largest ocean current, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current that moves east and transports 100 times the flow of all the worlds rivers. Despite the demarcation of this new ocean, its likely that the debate over the number of oceans will continue nonetheless. After all, there is but one world ocean as all five (or four) oceans on our planet are connected.

Chatelperronian Transition to Upper Paleolithic The Chà ¢telperronian period refers to one of five stone tool industries identified within the Upper Paleolithic period of Europe (ca 45,000-20,000 years ago). Once thought the earliest of the five industries, the Chà ¢telperronian is today recognized as roughly coeval with or perhaps somewhat later than the Aurignacian period: both are associated with the Middle Paleolithic to Upper Paleolithic transition, ca. 45,000-33,000 years ago. During that transition, the last Neanderthals in Europe died out, the result of a not-necessarily-peaceful cultural transition of European ownership from the long-established Neanderthal residents to the new influx of early modern humans from Africa. When first described and defined in the early twentieth century, the Chà ¢telperronian was believed to be the work of early modern humans (then called Cro Magnon), who, it was thought had descended directly from Neanderthals. The split between Middle and Upper Paleolithic is a distinct one, with great advances in the range of stone tool types and also with raw materialsthe Upper Paleolithic period has tools and objects made of bone, teeth, ivory and antler, none of which was seen in the Middle Paleolithic. The change is technology is today associated with the entrance of early modern humans from Africa into Europe. The discovery of Neanderthals at Saint Cesaire (aka La Roche a Pierrot) and Grotte du Renne (aka Arcy-sur-Cure) in direct association with Chà ¢telperronian artifacts, led to the original debates: who made the Chà ¢telperronian tools? Chà ¢telperronian Toolkit Chà ¢telperronian stone industries are a blend of earlier tool types from the Middle Paleolithic Mousterian and Upper Paleolithic Aurignacian style tool types. These include denticulates, distinctive side scrapers (called racloir chà ¢telperronien) and endscrapers. One characteristic stone tool found on Chà ¢telperronian sites are backed blades, tools made on flint chips which have been shaped with abrupt retouch. Chà ¢telperronian blades were made from a large, thick flake or block that were prepared in advance, in distinct comparison to later Aurignacian stone tool kits which were based on more extensively worked prismatic cores. Although the lithic materials at Chà ¢telperronian sites often include stone tools similar to the earlier Mousterian occupations, in some sites, an extensive collection of tools were produced on ivory, shell, and bone: these types of tools are not found in Mousterian sites at all. Important bone collections have been found at three sites in France: Grotte du Renne at Arcy sur-Cure, Saint Cesaire and Quinà §ay. At Grotte du Renne, the bone tools included awls, bi-conical points, tubes made of bird bones and pendants, and sawed ungulate antlers and picks. Some personal ornaments have been found at these sites, some of which are stained with red ochre: all of these are evidence of what archaeologists call modern human behaviors or behavioral complexity.​ The stone tools led to the assumption of cultural continuity, with some scholars well into the 1990s arguing that humans in Europe had evolved from Neanderthals. Subsequent archaeological and DNA research has overwhelmingly indicated that early modern humans in fact evolved in Africa, and then migrated into Europe and mixed with the Neanderthal natives. The parallel discoveries of bone tools and other behavioral modernity at Chatelperronian and Aurignacian sites, not to mention radiocarbon dating evidence has led to a realignment of the early Upper Paleolithic sequence. How They Learned That The major mystery of the Chà ¢telperronianassuming that it does indeed represent Neanderthals, and there certainly seems to be ample proof of thatis how did they acquire new technologies just at the point when the new African immigrants arrived in Europe? When and how that happenedwhen the African emigrants turned up in Europe and when and how the Europeans learned to make bone tools and backed scrapersis a matter for some debate. Did the Neanderthals imitate or learn from or borrow from the Africans when they began using sophisticated stone and bone tools; or were they innovators, who happened to learn the technique about the same time? Archaeological evidence at sites such as Kostenki in Russia and Grotta del Cavallo in Italy has pushed back the arrival of early modern humans to about 45,000 years ago. They used a sophisticated tool kit, complete with bone and antler tools and personal decorative objects, called collectively Aurignacian. Evidence is also strong that Neanderthals first appeared in Europe about 800,000 years ago, and they relied on primarily stone tools; but about 40,000 years ago, they may have adopted or invented bone and antler tools and personal decorative items.
